Recensie: ‘The Party Crasher’, Sophie Kinsella

‘Effie’s still not over her parents splitting up a year ago and her dad and his new girlfriend are posting photos everywhere (with the hashtags #viagraworks and #sexinyoursixties). Now they’re selling the beloved family home and holding a ‘house-cooling’ party, but Effie hasn’t been invited. Then she remembers her precious Russian dolls, safely tucked away up a chimney, and has no choice but to go back for them. She’ll just creep in, grab the dolls and leave. No one will know she was ever there.

But Effie can’t find the dolls. And as she secretly clambers around dusty attics, hides under tables and tries (and fails) to avoid bumping into her ex-boyfriend, she discovers unexpected truths about her family – and even about herself. With time running out, Effie starts to wonder if the only way to find out what’s really going on with her family is to simply crash the party…‘ (Uitgegeven door Penguin UK).

Iedereen is uitgenodigd, behalve Effie.

💜 With 'The Weaver Bride', writer Lydia Gregovic m 💜 With 'The Weaver Bride', writer Lydia Gregovic made a name for herself in the romantasy world last year. Now, it’s time for book two! In 'The False Vow', Lovett finds herself caught up in another mystery, embarking on a quest that feels all too familiar. But this time, there’s one big question: who can she really trust?

📚 'Lovett Tamerlane is engaged. A silkwitch whose magic can only be harnessed through marriage to a Weaver, Lovett was facing life in the cloisters when Eliot Lear offered the deal of a lifetime: an invitation to the Vainglory to compete for wealthy Weaver heir Noé Alaire’s hand in marriage, in exchange for her solving his sister’s murder. While they both got what they wanted, the competition was full of surprises. Lovett never expected to fall in love, and Eliot never anticipated that she’d betray him. Now Lovett has one goal: to take down her fiancé’s father—Bastian Alaire—and end his corrupt Weaver reign at any cost. But though the Vainglory may be over, danger still lurks at Fortblanche. And when Bastian presents Lovett with one last challenge—solve a murder that occurred within his walls, before the day of her wedding—she realizes the tests aren’t over. To pass this one, she’ll have to partner with the only person she hates more than her future father-in-law: his son, Noé. But as Lovett will learn . . . sometimes love and hate are two sides of the same coin.’

Review: More than a year after reading 'The Weaver Bride', its unique world of silkwitches and Weavers still lives rent-free in my mind, and 'The False Vow' pulled me right back in! Lovett is caught up in another murder mystery, with just three weeks to uncover the truth before her own future is sealed. I loved seeing her grow into a stronger, more independent young woman, even if her occasional naivety still gets her into trouble. The combination of romance, fantasy and detective work is absolutely brilliant, brought to life by captivating writing and even more intricate worldbuilding. 'The False Vow' is an exciting sequel that kept me hooked until the very end, and now I can only hope we get to read more from Gregovic soon!🥰

How stunning are these endpapers?! Loving them so How stunning are these endpapers?! Loving them so much🤗 I finished 'The Poison Daughter' last week, and here are my thoughts!

📚 ‘Every person Harlow kisses dies, and that’s the way she likes it. The poison-lipped youngest daughter of Lunameade’s magical founding family has used her power to annihilate their enemies. Her first husband is in the ground. Her new betrothed is next. But Harlow has a secret. When she’s not acting as her parents’ assassin, she moonlights as a vigilante hunting abusive men in their walled city. Meet a man. Lure him in. Kill him with a kiss. Until one night Harlow kisses a mark and he doesn’t die. Worse, he is her new betrothed, Henry Havenwood, and now he knows about her double life. Instead of exposing her and sparking a war between their rival families, he does something far more dangerous – he whisks her away to marry him in his wild mountain fort. Harlow doesn’t trust Henry, but the only way to protect her family and city is to uncover what his family is planning. Harlow must do the impossible: make the man who knows she’s a killer fall in love with her anyway.’

Review: This book! I have some thoughts😅 With 'The Poison Daughter' Masterson brings us vivid worldbuilding, a unique magic system, and complex characters in a dark romantasy filled with secrets, danger, and a seriously spicy romance. Harlow and Henry kept me intrigued, and Masterson’s immersive and amazing writing pulled me straight into their world. However, the explicit romance, intense violence, and uncomfortable voyeurism made this one a little too much for my personal taste😅 If you love your romantasy dark, spicy, and unapologetically explicit, this might just be your next read!

QOTD: Are you ready to dive into some spooky reads QOTD: Are you ready to dive into some spooky reads?👻

We know her as the author behind well-known dark fantasy stories such as 'Predatory Natures'. Now, she’s back with a romantic horror novel that will send shivers down your spine. A story that’s perfect for this time of year and the lead-up to Halloween. Meet 'A Darker Act' by Amy Goldsmith.

📚 'When high school senior Hazel joins her school’s elite theatre group, the Edgemoor Players, all she’s looking for is one more extracurricular to add to her packed college resume. This year, the Players are putting on their most ambitious production yet: a tragic romance inspired by local legends of a ghostly huntsman who is said to have once stalked the nearby moors. That was then. Now, no one talks about the play, its disastrous final performance, or the strange, eerie happenings which preceded it. But when Hazel signs up for an extra credit camping trip months later, she finds herself suddenly reunited with her former castmates for a weekend. Trapped together in the woods, Hazel will have to confront her old friends – including Roman, the Players’ enigmatic leading man. And they will all have to reckon with a far deadlier truth: that what they started last year isn’t over. Months ago, the Edgemoor Players woke something up – and now it won’t rest until it catches its prey.’

Review: Horror isn’t usually my go-to genre because, honestly, I find it a little too scary😂, but Halloween is the perfect excuse to step out of my comfort zone! In 'A Darker Act', Goldsmith brings us a chilling mix of dark secrets, dangerous situations, and a mysterious theater group that will keep you guessing. With a gripping dual timeline, unexpected twists, and characters who might not be who they seem, the tension builds from the very first chapter. Goldsmith’s vivid writing brings every spooky moment to life, while a touch of romance adds just the right amount of light to the darkness. Creepy, thrilling, and brilliantly written, 'A Darker Act' is the perfect read to send shivers down your spine this spooky season!

QOTD: Which book are you reading this weekend? Al QOTD: Which book are you reading this weekend?
